Mysuru, October 23, 2021 (www.justkannada.in): A pond said to be 400-year-old has been discovered in Mysuru. The pond has been discovered, as a result of the curiosity of a Panchayat Development Officer (PDO), and her enthusiasm.
The pond is located at Nagavaala, on the outskirts of Mysuru. Not only that, the pond has been restored and filled with water due to the efforts of PDO Shobha Dinesh.
Speaking to Justkannada.in, PDO Shobha said, “I had visited the 25-acre tank near Nagavaala, along with Panchayat President C. Narendra. During our visit, Nagendra had told me that there was a pond near the tank when he was a young boy. He had informed that it was an ancient pond, and also recalled his childhood days when the people of the surrounding areas used to draw water from the pond for household use. I felt very excited to know more about the pond. Luckily, the survey of this tank was included under the ‘Village Drinking Water Scheme.’ There was also an opportunity of removing silt from the tank and develop it under the MGNREGA program. Hence, I discussed this with the Panchayat leaders and prepared a plan at an estimated cost of Rs. 9 lakh. While removing silt and cleaning the tank required Rs. 3 lakh, construction of a wall around the pond required Rs. 3 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh for fencing.”
“The works commenced as per the project. Initially, the works were moving at a snail’s pace. Once we found the marks on the pond, we were all excited. Soon rainy season arrived and the pond filled with water. Also, water started oozing out of the pond triggering our enthusiasm. Thus, the project was completed,” she explained.
“The people are very happy that the pond is restored, along with the tank. We are satisfied that we have been successful in discovering an ancient water resource and restoring it. It has been possible with the efforts of all. I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who encouraged me and supported me throughout,” said PDO Shobha Dinesh.
