Mother-daughter duo held in Mysuru for selling infants

Mysuru, August 4, 2021 (www.justkannada.in): A mother and daughter, who were convincing poor parents to part with their infants, and later sell the infants for want of money have been held by the Police.
The duo is identified as Srimati alias Saraswathi, and daughter Lakshmi. They used to target poor parents and somehow convince them to part with the infants and sell it to childless parents.
The duo had opened a child care center in Najangud. They used to identify vulnerable parents. They used to take pregnant women to the hospital and help them in delivery. Two cases of selling infants have come to light. The police who were investigating the case of a similar case in Kollegal and Nanjangud traced out the duo.
Addressing a press meet in Mysuru today, Superintendent of Police R. Chetan informed that a case was registered in Najangud recently, where a woman named Jyothi, after losing her husband, had given her three-month-old infant to another lady called Srimathi. In the beginning, it didn’t appear like a racket. But a deeper investigation by the police traced that Srimathi had sold the infant for Rs. 3 lakh.
Suspecting more such cases the police had intensified the investigation, following which another case has been unearthed.
In the one case, the infant of Jyothi was sold to a couple of Holenarsipura and in another case, the infant of Manjula was sold to a couple in Kollegal. Police have arrested the accused mother-daughter duo Srimathi and Lakshmi. The persons who have sold the infants, mediators, and the people who have purchased all are considered as guilty. Legal action will be initiated against all of them, informed SP R. Chethan.
