Mysuru, May 20, 2022 (www.justkannada.in): “Our aim is to make India self-reliant in fertilizers and edible oil production,” opined Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje.
She addressed a press meet in Mysuru today. “Ours is an agricultural country. Ninety percent of our farmers are small and secondary level farmers. Several agricultural fields that are located nearby to towns and cities in our country are rapidly converting into sites. The Union Government has formed several unions keeping in mind the small and secondary level farmers. A sum of Rs. 6,000 is being directly paid to the bank accounts of farmers every year. We have all seen bullock pairs and oxen earlier. But today farmers are finding it difficult even to look after the bullocks,” she said.
“There is no sunflower or peanut in the edible oils that are you consuming. India should become self-reliant in production of edible oils. As of now we are importing 70% of the edible oil for our needs. Majority of the palm oil comes from Malaysia and Indonesia. It is refined and sold under different brand names. Hence, the Union Government is encouraging production of oil seeds and crops. We have aim to achieve self-reliance in the area of edible oil production,” she added.
